WHAT IS PILATES?
The Pilates Method is a holistic movement method created by Joseph Pilates (originally called Contrology) and developed during the early 1900’s. There are over 500 exercises that can be executed to help each person’s individual needs. The Method was originally created through 34 mat exercises. The mat exercises are the heart of the Method. However, Joseph Pilates also created several apparatuses during his lifetime to better help the body adapt and learn this Method. The most well-known apparatus are: Universal Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, High Chair, and various sizes of Barrels. Whether working on the mat or the apparatus, the exercises are performed in a sequence or order, to strengthen the muscles and align the body working from the core of the body. On a deeper level the principles of the method: concentration, control, centering, breath, flow and precision were intended to be applied to everyday activities, hence increasing one’s longevity.
Pilates is a unique system in itself and can offer benefits to everyone at any age or stage of life. That is one of the things that makes the Method so unique and effective! The exercises focus on working the body from your core or Powerhouse. The Core is often confused as just the abdominals, but it includes your back, hips and glutes as well as your abdominals. It is a whole body workout and can be life-changing to say the least. You just have to experience it yourself.
HOW DO I START MY PILATES PRACTICE?
How many times a week should I come?
Like many fitness programs, it is recommended that you do Pilates three times a week to get the best results. However, as long as you are consistent in your practice, you will see results if you practice once a week.
Should I start with the Private sessions or classes?
We recommend starting with a private session to start your Pilates journey. During a private session, you will work one-on-one with a certified instructor and learn mat and apparatus exercises. After completing your private sessions, we can provide recommendations to continue your practice, whether with additional private sessions, semi-privates or small group classes.
