THE CLASSICAL PILATES METHOD

Originally named ‘Contrology’, Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates and is a comprehensive movement system focused on core strength, posture alignment, and overall body conditioning. Pilates is a method that incorporates mind, body, and spirit. It includes over 500 exercises, originating from 34 mat exercises, and uses various apparatus like; the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, High Chair, and Barrels to enhance learning and adaptation.

Our daily activity, stress, gravity and bad habits change the way the body aligns and manages itself. Pilates exercises incorporate strength, flexibility, and mental focus that work to achieve balance to the body and undo these shortcomings. Pilates is suitable for all ages and fitness levels and will increase athletic performance and aid in injury rehabilitation.

“In 10 sessions you feel the difference, in 20 sessions you see the different,
and in 30 sessions you will have a new body.” Joseph Pilates

How many times a week should I come?
Like many fitness programs, it is recommended that you do Pilates 3 times a week to get the best results. However, as long as you are consistent in your practice, you will see results if you practice once a week.

Should I start with the Pilates Mat classes or Apparatus?
We recommend starting with a private session to start your Pilates journey. During a private session, you will work one-on-one with a certified instructor and will work on the mat and apparatus. After you have completed your private session we can provide you with recommendations to continue your practice, whether with additional private sessions or small group classes.

CLASSICAL PILATES AND THE EQUIPMENT USED TO BUILD YOUR PRACTICE

Everything in the Classical Pilates method started with 34 mat exercises. The mat is the soul or the “magic” of the method. All the different apparatus: Universal Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Barrels, etc. were designed to help build a better understanding and connection to these 34 mat exercises. Take a look at all the apparatus that make up the Pilates family. Turning Point Fitness uses all of the apparatuses to help build your practice and understanding of the Pilates Method.

Universal Reformer: The Reformer is the most commonly known piece of apparatus. Similar to the mat there is an order to the exercises performed on the Reformer. The Reformer will provide feedback and resistance to the body and ultimately help improve your mat exercises and overall understanding of Pilates.

Cadillac: This is the largest piece of apparatus and is very versatile. It helps build strength and flexibility. There are various components to it such as arm springs, leg springs, push-thru bar, roll back bar, and trapeze. The Wall Unit or Tower is a smaller version of the Cadillac and has the functionality of the Cadillac minus the trapeze.

Electric Chair or High Chair: The Electric Chair is the ‘big brother or sister’ to the Wunda Chair. It provides support to the body while in a vertical position helping to build strength and balance.

Wunda Chair: This chair was designed to be used in the home for your practice and could be converted into a sitting chair for personal use. This apparatus does not provide as much support to the body and is used to advance your practice and challenge your balance and strength.

Baby or Arm Chair: This apparatus is used to help connect the arms to the back and understand the concept of lift.  While it doesn’t look like much on the outside, she is fierce and can be instrumental in helping build your practice.

Barrel Family: Ladder, Spine Corrector and Small Barrel: The barrels are helpful in opening the body and providing stretch and length. Each barrel can offer different support for the body and help build mat exercises and your practice.
